  • FRANCIS LOCKE, 1. m. ELIZABETH WINSHIP of Medford, Feb. 25, 1713, who d. 1758, a. 67; 2. m. Wid. MARTHA (RUSSELL) DUNSTER, Mh. 15, 1759. She was the wid. of Henry Dunster, to whom she was m. Feb. 25, 1707-8. She was b. July 26, 1691, at Cambridge, the dau. of Joseph Russell, who m. Mary Belcher, June 2;i, 1662. Mr. Dunster was a grandson of Pres. Dunster of Har. Col. Francis Locke, his wife Elizabeth and his dau. Elizabeth were original members of the Church in West Camb. which was formed 1739. He resided in Medford a few years after his marriage where his two eldest chil. were born, but in 1718 he was of Woburn, as at that date he sold to his brother Daniel all his " interest in the mansion house in which I now dwell." This was probably a part of the mansion of his father, and with it he also sold several lots of land. This estate or a portion of it had probably been given to him by his father Dea. William' Jr. In 1719 he probably moved to what is now called the " Foot of the Rocks " in West Cambridge, then Cambridge, he having in Aug. 1718, bought of Edward Winship of Lexington and Gershom Cutter, Jr. of Cambridge, eight acres of land in Camb. May 4, 1733, he purchased of John Francis of Medford another lot of land in Cambridge ; and Ap. 13, 1736, he bought of Benjamin Bagnal of Boston, land in Camb., and Feb. 10, 1746, he bought of Sajnuel Whittemore eleven acres of land in Cambridge. In 1760 he sold his son Samuel a small lot of land at the " Foot of the Rocks," with a dwelling house then occupied by Samuel Godding, being " a part of the Mill pasture," also another small piece ; the compensation was L26.13.4 "lawful." Dec. 1769, he sold his son Samuel for L141.5.5, a part of " Cane's lot," a part of " Bagnal's lot," and a part of the " Whittemore lot," all at the " Foot of the Rocks," reserving the control and use of the same during his life. At the same time he sold to all his children for 23.6.8, that part of his house called " the kitchen and little room " and the corn house and land, reserving the use of it during his life. After his decease it was to be divided, giving Samuel a double share. In 1747, Francis Locke and Gershom Cutter, were fined 30s. ea. for travelling on Sunday from Camb. to Newton (to attend meeting) by Heniy Gibbs, Jus. Peace. But the Court of Sessions ordered the proceedings quashed. (Court Ses. Rec.) He was a tanner, and also kept a tavern. The house in which he resided is now standing at the intersection of the main road with the road leading to Woburn, and is owned by Stephen Locke. He d. Sep. 3, 1770, a. 80, and his wid. d. June 27, 1771, a. 81.
