Joshua Locke

Male 3 -

  • Joshua, b. July 22, 1732-3, at Wob. ; m. Abigail Maynard.Lieut. JOSHUA LOCKE, m. ABIGAIL MAYNARD,(a) (of Westboro') He resided at Westboro', where most of his children were born. Aug. 1765, with his wf. Abigail, chil. Grace, Betty, Henry, Nancy, and Christian, he removed to Sudbury, where he had a son Fortunatus, b. 1779, as appears by the Rec. of Sudbury, but I think it should be 1769.

He was an Ensign in the army under Gen. Winslow, at Nova Scotia, May, 1755, and prob. was the Lieut. Locke who was in the army with Gen. Braddock, and was wounded at the time of " Braddock's Defeat." He was also with Col. Rogers, the famous Ranger, in New York and Canada ; and at some period was one of the King's Surveyors. He also was distinguished as the only one, by the name of Locke, who was a Loyalist, or more generally known by the term Tory ; and when the British evacuated Boston, Mh. 17, 1776, he left with the army ; was in one of the battles at Staten Island, where he met and recognised his sons Frederick and Henry in the American army.

How long he remained with the British army I cannot learn, but eventually went to England, leaving his wf. and family, and never returned. His youngest son Fortunatus, it is said, went to England some years afterwards, and nothing further is known of either. His wf. remained with her father at Westboro', and d. not long after her husband went to England.
