  • Josiah, b. Feb. 6, 1735, at Westboro' ; m. Persis Matthews.

    Capt. JOSIAH LOCKE, m. PERSIS MATTHEWS, of New Braintree, who was b. Sep. 3, 1735, as appears by one record, and by another, Nov. 16, 1735 ; she had a twin sister Hannah, and was one of 15 chil., 13 of which lived to adult age. She d. at Litchfield, N. Y., Ap. 21, 1839, a. 103 yrs. 5 mos. and 7 days, having had 8 chil. 67 gr. chil. 147 gr. gr. chil. and 32 gr. gr. gr. chil., and having lived to see six generations, and d. leaving a good name behind her. Capt. Locke resided at Westboro' in 1760, in Leicester in 1765, and for several years after ; in Hardwick in 1768, where he was Capt. in the Militia, and soon after the Battle at Lexington he marched with his company to Roxbury, and remained in camp some time. While at Hardwick he kept a " Country Store." About 1779 he removed to Wilmington, Vt. which town he had previously surveyed and laid out, and his plan is now in the clerk's office in that town, where he owned considerable land, and was a Justice of the Peace. From thence he removed to Litchfield, N. Y. where he d. Ap. 18, 1819, a. 84 yrs. 2 mos. and 13 days. He was administrator on his father's estate at Southboro' in 1767. He sold Jona. Ward of Southboro', 125 acres of land in Spencer, May 19, 1769, and in 1770 and 1773, he sold land in Leicester and Paxton.
