Jonathan Locke

Jonathan Locke

Male 1732 - 1813  (81 years)

  • F204 Jonathan, b. Jan. 29, 1732, m. June 8, 1758, Abigail Towle,

F204 Jonathan Locke, born in Rye Jan. 29, 1732, married in Greenland June 8, 1758, Abigail Towle. She born 1736, died March 22, 1817. He bought land in Rye in 1758 and lived there as a farmer. He was an inspector of "Minute Men" in Rye 1777. He gave each son a farm except Hall Jackson, who chose money for an education. He died in Rye, Sept. 13, 1813.

He set out tvvo elms in front of his home in Rye, now large and majestic. Soon after planting them he noticed a boy riding by on horseback break off a branch to whip his horse. The boy got the whipping, and years after the boy, now a verj' old man would go to that tree, tap it with his cane, and thank Locke for whipping him and so saving so fine a tree. He then would go to see his great-grandchildren and tell them about it. Another time, going to Portsmouth on horseback, he met a man whom he invited to share his horse. Coming to the tavern and knowing his companion's weakness, he called for a gill of rum, and dividing it he drank the other's health with the words, "Those who cannot govern themselves, must be governed."
