  • F175 Edward, b. Dec. 18, 1741, m. Abigail Haines.

    F175 Edward Locke, born in Kingston Dec. 18, 1741, married Abigail Haines, dau. of John and Hannah (Wiggin). He was a Revolutionary soldier, Edward, a yeoman of Brentwood, bought 40 acres of land in Gilmanton 1764, and Edwai;d a cordwainer of Toplin, bought land joining East Concord line in 1764, and sold it in 1765. He and his wife moved to Gilmanton in 1775, where they were baptized Aug. 15, 1775- Abigail lived later than 1810, and is buried two miles west of Farmington Village, N. H., on the road to New Durham Ridge. He joined the Baptist Church May 7, 1777, and was licensed to preach by that Church Dec. 4, 1779- In 1780 he became a preacher of the Freewill denomination, of which he was an originator. In company with Elder Tozar Lord of Barrington and John Shepherd, Esq., of Gilmanton, he is said to have spent a week in fasting and prayer locked in an unoccupied house, at the close of which they wrote down their views and ordained each other in the new denomination. He turned to Shakerism in 1782, with all his congregation. In 1792 he removed to Farmington, Me., and was the first settler in Chesterville, Me., where he started a church colony scheme, which failed, and the criticism caused him to leave the pastorate. He went ipilling in 1800, and died when absent from home, in Embden. Me., Feb. 1824. (See History of Gilmanton, page 215.) He possibly had more than these children given.
