  • John, b. Dec. 30, 1729 or 30 ; m. Mary Reed ; Int. Aug. 12, 1749.

    JOHN LOCKE, alias KENDALL, [98] m. MARY REED ; int. Aug. 12, 1749. He was the son of Nathaniel and Abigail (Locke) Kendall. His mother was dau. of John Locke (21), and he was prob. b. Dec. 30, 1729, although the Wob. Rec. say 1730, but they also say that his mother d. May 16, 1730. One date must be wrong. The journals of the House of Representatives contain the following entry, under date of 19 June, 1739 :

    " Petition of John Locke, of Woburn, praying ye order of ye Court that his daughter Abigail Kendall's son John may take on him ye name of Locke for reasons mentioned." - " Granted." -

    The petition has not been found, but the " reasons mentioned," may have been that his grandfather having buried all his sons, was desirous of having some one to bear his name, and therefore adopted his grandson, to whom he sold or gave all his property. Why he retained both names, the writer cannot conceive, but in various deeds and other papers he is always called " John Locke alias Kendall."

    He was a man of some property ; - Mh. 15, 1748, he bought of James Proctor, 50 acres near a place called " Hog Swamp ; " - Aug. 10, 1750, he bought of his gr. fa. one lot of 18 acres, and another of 50, "part of the homestead with buildings thereon" - and all his personal estate excepting one cow and a heifer." He united with his gr. fa. in the sale of 30 acres to Benj. VVyman of Wob. Jany. 2, 1749 : - Jany. 16, 1750, he sold Jacob Wright and Nathan Simonds, 10 acres near "Hog Swamp," and 10 acres called "Locke's old place," (prob. his gr. fa's.) bounded Westerly by Benj. Simonds and Thomas Reed, South by Thomas and Israel Reed, Easterly and Northerly by Israel Reed and Concord road. Various other purchases and sales by him are of record.

    He d. prior to Dec. 19, 1755, administration having been granted on his estate at that time. His wid. m. Ezekiel Reed, June 15, 1759 or '60. The writer has been informed that he was killed in the French war, but no time or place is stated. He may have been wounded, and perhaps d. at home, for several witnesses, including some females, were summoned into court to prove what disposition he had made of his estate.
