James Locke

James Locke

Male 1752 - 1833  (81 years)

  • F193 James, b. 1752, m. 1778, Mary Bean.

F193 James Locke, born 1752; married 1778, Mary Bean, who was born 1758 and died 1844. He tried to enlist for the Revolution but was rejected by Capt. Norris, 1775. James and Mary went from Rye to North Barnstead, where he was one of the proprietors of Locke's Corner, 1768. When a lad of seventeen he worked in a grist mill in Rochester, and received one bushel of corn for five and one-half days work. Throwing his meal over his shoulder, he would leave for home Saturday noon following the spotted trees through the forest, arriving home at night, often so weary that he could scarcely walk. His fiancee being a Quakeress, he also became a Quaker, and after marriage bought wild land near what is now known as Locke's Corner, and converted it into a beautiful and productive farm, on which he passed a prosperous and contented life. He was selectman several years, and regarded by all as a man of honor. He died in Nov. 1833,
