• Notes

  William Berry lived in Rye. It is not known whether he was born by the time his father settled there. ---------------- There are two theories about Judith Locke; 1.) that she is a daughter of Nathaniel Locke who was in the Portsmouth area at the same time as Capt. John Locke; 2.) that she is Nathaniel Locke's widow, thus her maiden name would be Hermins. I find the first much more plausible given the timelines; moreover, if she were Nathaniel's widow, she would have been more than a decade older than William.
