Benjamin Perkins

Benjamin Perkins

Male 1760 - 1848  (87 years)

  • Benjamin Perkins enlisted in Epping, January 1777, in Capt. Jason White's Co., Col. Joseph Cilley's First New Hampshire Regiment, and was discharged in Danbury, Conn., 25 Jan 1780.

Family tradition holds that Benjamin was large for his age, and able to enlist at the age of 16 by adding a couple of years to his age, and with some help from his older brother Jonathan. After the war he lived briefly in Hampton Falls but by 1787 he settled in the southern part of Meredith where he farmed. In 1792 he purchased 20-40 acres of land from Col. Ebenezer Smith, one the original proprietors of Meredith. He and a neighbor who are credited with naming the Chemung section of Meredith after remarking on the area's resemblance to Chemung, New York, where they had sered together in the war.

At this time subsubsitence farming still dominated, so he probably grew some combination of corn, rye, potatos, and squash, the typical crops in the area. At the end of his life he only held a little over 20 acres on which he raised cattle. He and his wife are buried in a tiny family graveyard in the woods near Meredith Center.
