He was on various petitions 1717-21-26; was a selectman in 1726, and called Lieut. William; was a moderator in 1743. He bought land on the way from Sandy Beach to Greenland, 1723-4, and gave it to his son Jonathan in 1728. In 1723 he bought land at Portsmouth Plains. William, a shopkeeper of Portsmouth, bought land on northwest side of the road from "Ye Bank to Greenland." June 30, 1728, he bought land in Rye called "Ye Island of ye Pond once called Locke's Hole." He sold land in Rye in 1751, and died there Jan. 22, 1768, aged 91.

William Berry lived in Rye. It is not known whether he was born by the time his father settled there.

There are two theories about Judith Locke; 1.) that she is a daughter of Nathaniel Locke who was in the Portsmouth area at the same time as Capt. John Locke; 2.) that she is Nathaniel Locke's widow, thus her maiden name would be Hermins. I find the first much more plausible given the timelines; moreover, if she were Nathaniel's widow, she would have been more than a decade older than William.

Captain John Locke was probably baptized in London, England, Sept. 16, 1627, married about 1652, Elizabeth, the daughter of William and Jane Berry, and was killed by the Indians Aug. 26, 1696, in Rye, N. H. Elizabeth the widow was living in 1708 when the estate was settled and the children given below shared in its distribution. Several old papers prepared by descendants born about 1735, give the entire family, and in the following order. As first names only were given it is impossible to determine whether the girls were married, or to whom married at that time (1708) but we know nearly all were. -- Locke Genealogy 1916
