F39 James Locke, b. Oct. 4, 1709, m. March 2, 1731-2, Mercy Foss of Barnstead. He bought 50 acres of land in Rochester 1732, and sold the same in 1733. "James, cordwainer and Mercy," sold land in Rochester 1737, also in 1763.

One Adams is called the first settler of Barnstead, the reason being that he settled in the southern part, while James Locke settled in the remote northeast part a few years before. James served under Genl. Wolf at Quebec in 1759, and returning to his home in Rochester, again took up his routine of farming and hunting. On one of these trips he fell in with a hunter named Libbey, who lived on what is now New Durham Ridge. Libbey wanted a neighbor, even though he be five miles away, and showed Locke a clearing where Indians had apparently camped. This seemed a desirable location, as it was within a mile of a large tract of marsh land, and its hay would winter several cattle. Here he built his cabin and to it moved his family from Rochester about 1762. George L. Hall of Barnstead near the Strafford line lives on the site of this cabin. Locke and Libbey worked the marsh together, cutting and stacking the grass to be drawn in the winter on sleds by the elders or their sons. Moose fed on these stacks, and one winter three were shot; Indians also slept there but did no damage. James died on the home place about 1805, and was buried there. His wife was a large powerful woman.

H. Elizabeth the widow was living in 1708 when the estate was settled and the children given below shared in its distribution. Several old papers prepared by descendants born about 1735, give the entire family, and in the following order. As first names only were given it is impossible to determine whether the girls were married, or to whom married at that time (1708) but we know nearly all were. -- Locke Genealogy 1916
