F127 Joseph Locke, born 1734 (?), in Rhode Island, married 1756 (?) Lucy or Elizabeth E. Rathbon, who was born in Exeter, R. I, 1735, the dau. of John. They both died about 1815. They moved from Block Island to So. Kingston, R. I, about 1750.

Mercy Nixon in Block Island, Dec. 12, 1722; Thomas Rathbun, Feb. 20, 1730-1 gave land to "Marcy Lock, for the love and good will that I have unto her, whom I have brought up from her childhood." Block Island Records. Joseph Locke was made freeman in 1734, was "town sargent and constable" in 1737; was assessed for taxes from 1748 to 1773, between these dates he held many minor ofifices, but he and his wife are not mentioned after 1773. He was called a planter of Hampton in 1727, when he made a deposition about land. He d. Nov. 12, 1734, in Hampton. Tradition says he had 19 children and lived where Mrs. Sarah F. Willcut now lives.

There is an error in Arthur H Locke's book. AHL had identified the mother of Nathaniel's wife Dorothy Blake as Deborah Dawlton, which has a variant spelling of Dallton. The mother's maiden name was actually Deborah Everard, and it was Deborah Everard's mother who was a Dalton. Captain John Locke was probably baptized in London, England, Sept. 16, 1627, married about 1652, Elizabeth, the daughter of William and Jane Berry, and was killed by the Indians Aug. 26, 1696, in Rye, N. H. Elizabeth the widow was living in 1708 when the estate was settled and the children given below shared in its distribution. Several old papers prepared by descendants born about 1735, give the entire family, and in the following order. As first names only were given it is impossible to determine whether the girls were married, or to whom married at that time (1708) but we know nearly all were. -- Locke Genealogy 1916
