This nugget from NEHGR, April, 1851 was hard to place -- this name appears in both the John Locke and William Locke trees!

News / 1915 Lockeport
« Last post by geoff_smith on April 26, 2018, 09:39:09 AM »

In 1915 the Lockeport Cold Storage Company took the bold step of shipping frozen fish to England to determine whether serving a more distant market would be viable.  Other hot topics in 1915 (aside from the Wold War): sail vs. motor boats, and a new technique to freeze fish almost immediately.

News / The Critical Path: Places
« Last post by geoff_smith on April 14, 2018, 07:30:50 PM »

Now that we have more than 2500 locations in the database, the most significant roadblock now is getting the lat/long coordinates for all the places in the database.  These are all updated on the staging server from Google.

There are several issues with places that I find awkward.  First, what to do when new counties are created.  Many cousins were born in Strafford County, NH, but died in Belknap county -- without moving! -- due to the creation of the latter.  I prefer to list the county as it existed at the time of the event, but this confuses Google maps.  And Rye is generally imputed to be in Rockingham County, which did not exist before 1769.

I received a couple dozen corrections since Supplement I was added!  A big thank-you to Bob Locke, Jim Burnham, Ned Locke, George Locke, Vern Margard, Lynette McMahon, and Chris Locke.  And a special thank-you to Ernestine Locke (R.I.P.), who wrote up some corrections 14 years ago that reached me this week!

News / Big Burn
« Last post by geoff_smith on February 17, 2018, 04:35:55 PM »

Samuel Barron Locke IV, great-grandson of the ancestor from the Feb 4 post, in 1910 and fresh out of Yale Forestry School, went to work at the Sawtooth National Forest in Idaho.

That would place him there during the Big Burn, the castrophic wildfire in 1910 that burned three million acres in Idaho, Washington and Montana and that led to President Roosevelt's creation of the national forest service. He was deputy director of the park in 1913.
