Locke descendant Archibald Cann, b. Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, sailed in coastal waters in the Atlantic for a short time and then entered deep-water service and made his way to Astoria, Oregon. He was the first captain in charge of the first lightship on the Pacific Coast, the
Columbia River No. 50, placed into service at the mouth of the Columbia River off Astoria in 1892. The lightship was credited with dramatically reducing the number of ships foundering while approaching the Columbia.
